Books for potty training

Potty training is an important milestone in a child’s life. Daytime and nighttime potty training are two totally different issues. Children learn to stay dry during the daytime faster and it is easier compared to nighttime. In this post, I will write only about daytime training in this article.

Children should be potty trained before joining a nursery. Many schools have this as a mandatory policy. Around the age of 3 or 4, most children stop wearing diapers. Occasional accidents might happen but they soon learn to hold it. It takes around 3 days to train a child. In my case, It was possible because I was with my child the whole day. That’s how I was able to manage the timing. I would like to share some tips which worked for me and believe will help others as well who are in similar situations.

You will need books. Not self-help books for parents but books for toddlers and preschoolers. You might be wondering what potty training has to do with books. Believe me, books have been a big part of training.

It sounds funny when I say this but for a child or even an adult, to sit still on the pot for more than 2 minutes is boring and daunting. While training they have to do this every hour. They will cry, throw a tantrum and resist. To avoid this, you have to keep them busy and find ways to entertain them. I feel taking a toy to the toilet is unhygienic. I am not suggesting taking a book inside either.

It goes without saying that books take the reader or listener to another world. It takes the mind off any problem or difficult situation. And it is the best solution to pass time.

This is what I did to keep my child busy and patient while training. I sat on a stool outside the toilet and read him his favorite books. I read them animatedly to keep him interested. I had kept some books aside just for this purpose. I didn’t read those to him any other time during the week except during potty training. Anytime I thought he is losing patience, I would say “Do you what happens next?” Or “ Let me read you another book?” Talking about books is another way to change the topic.

Every hour I took him inside and read his books. I asked him questions about the story or we just talked about random things. After 3 days, I increased the time duration between two visits. It worked very well.

If you are thinking, why not watch youtube videos to keep the child busy? My answer is that watching videos or playing video games, takes away too much attention. The child will completely forget why he sitting there in the first place.

Additionally, buy a potty ring with your child’s favorite character on it. We had a ‘Thomas and friends’ themed potty ring. In the beginning, boys also sit on the ring for peeing. The new underwears also have to be of the child’s favorite character for encouragement.

Tell each other before going to the toilet. This way they will start telling you when they have the urge. A new house rule is to be introduced which is going to the toilet before going out of the house.

Also, washing hands properly has to be taught. What will help is: A bubbly soap, a rhythm to sing when washing hands, a cute little towel, and a step stool to reach the sink.

There are several cute toilet training books for toddlers. It is good to read some of these to encourage them.

The essentials of potty training are a Tiolet ring, wet wipes, toilet paper, new underwear, bubbly soap, small step stool for reaching the sink. We had bought everything with his favorite book character on them.

The right time to start potty training is when you have time and patience. Every child has a different personality. The time taken to learn any skill will be either longer or shorter. Please don’t compare them with other children or come under pressure to train the child when you are not ready.

Color mixing chart for little artists

Sunny boy likes to paint so he is always asking which color is formed by mixing x and y colors!! So I did an activity to make a color chart. This activity helps in understanding combinations and permutations , how the value/ shade of the color changes when either white or black OR lighter or darker shades of colors are mixed...different quantity of colors can result in different shades.

I believe the easiest way for a child to understand and learn something is through practical example/experiment or demonstration. If the activity is fun filled then even better!!

I started by telling him that it is like a science experiment ..We will add colors and find out what the resulting color is. Then we will note it down in a chart ..This way we will know and remember the combinations..

This made him very excited.. I gave him the colors one by one, he mixed and we noted it down.. I have taped this chart in his room ...He remembers all the combinations and if he does not then it is always on the wall to check!!

Art and Plant science : Recycling wine bottles

Me and sunny boy(3yrs) do lot of recycling art and craft activities in the afternoon. I strongly believing in recycling. I have been doing it since I was a kid ... I want to infuse the similar ideas about recycling in his mind.. The another thing is that it does save a lot of money which I would be spending if I have to buy new stuff for toddler activities..

This project is a Recycling + Kids craft activity + Bathroom decor.

I had these two empty wines bottles. These look perfect to put a money plant in it.
My son gets very excited for a painting activity. We started first by putting sticky tape on it. Sunny boy found circle stickers which he put on one bottle. He kept on asking why are we putting sticky tape?I told him to wait and watch. He decided to paint it blue.
I was a bit apprehensive about letting him hold a glass bottle so I held on it all the time while he painted. The next one I choose to paint it golden. So he did paint it.

We kept it for drying for a day or two. I pulled the tape to reveal the design. The effect is Wow..It does look pretty..

We put the creeper in the bottle..discussing about plant science- what and why plant need - sunlight and water, also we are observing the growth of roots and how the plant turns itself towards the sunlight .. Who knew a simple project could teach a toddler so much!!

Similar designs can be made on mason jars to convert them into tealight candle holders!!

Cookie for two

After baking almost 50 cakes in last 1.5 years my little baker is bored of baking cakes..He doesn't even want to eat them anymore ..So he as ventured into baking cookies..These cookies were baked yesterday.. I found a super easy recipe for two cookies.. I melted the butter, read the instructions and kept the cookies in the oven to bake..Sunny boy measured the ingredients and mixed them together..made a dough and flattened in out to make the cookies.. The outcome was superb..We didn't put any cocoa or choco chips and the sugar was less but then he does not like sugar and chocolate (strange) so it worked well for us..You can find this recipe here: in Katrina's Kitchen

On a other note, I know I have been writing after November 14...
I have been on a beautiful creative project of my own- raising a child.. It is a most rewarding and satisfying job I have ever done.. Its my joy of my life.. I spend every week day doing creative projects with my son. My son is now 3 years old. My sunny boy is a bundle of energy full of curiosity and inquisitiveness.. I have been doing a variety of creative projects with him in all areas he is interested in...I am discovering myself through this journey..I love my job as his mom and I don't think or read about anything other than creative projects .. These include art and craft, science, baking, planetary science, construction, writing and reading skills, reading and books, sports ..

We have moved to Singapore a few months back and my house just like all  my previous homes is pretty and elegant..but interiors and decorating  is just a small tiny part of my personality now..

I intend to start to write about my creative projects with my son..I need someplace to document these and hopefully this information is useful for some mom somewhere ..

How to make a drum with recycled container/cans

The idea of making the drum came to my mind days back when I saw Avaneesh drumming on a can. The can looked perfect for a drum for my little drummer boy. I do daily creative afternoon activities with him and this seemed to be perfect activity to be done with a 2 year old. I used a empty container which is of perfect size for little drummer hands.

Avaneesh was very excited when I told him that we are going to make a drum today. I cut shapes out of paper for the top part and the designs on the sides of the drum. I do all the cutting work in front of Avaneesh so that he understand the entire process of making it as well. His creativity will increase more this way. I asked him which colors he want to paint the triangular pattern with to which he said red. So he painted it red , the top part with blue and the border strips with orange. Then are all the pieces drying in the balcony. I take this opportunity to talk with him about the sun's heat and how the painting dries up so fast outside instead of inside.

We glued two white papers around the can.  My son enjoyed spreading the glue on the paper and the can. Then he helped me glue the designs around the can. We glued some paper to the dowels. This is how it looks like and..

There he is my little drummer. It is a big hit with him.

In case you want to try making this drum with your little one, the only things you will need are a can to be recycled, dowels/ chopsticks, water/poster color paints, paper, glue and scissors.

In my son's library: The way back home by Oliver Jeffers

\

My son is 26 months old and loves books(touch wood!!) The way back home is the first book of author Oliver Jeffers I have bought for him. This book is perfect for toddlers. Introduces to the world of mystery, aliens and adventure. It is a interesting tale of a little boy who finds a airplane in his cupboard. He gets stuck on the moon and meets a alien. They become friends and help each other to get back home.  It is good for introducing to the elements of universe- dark space, stars, planets, moon. It is perfect for toddlers.

What I like about this book :

Imagination : I think toddlers world should be like this full of imagination, without the logic of real life, thinking and dreaming about the (im)possible.
Emotions: I like that the book explores many emotions like being alone, afraid, friendship, helping each other, being tired and distracted, parting with a friend and worrying if they  would see each other.
Beautiful illustrations and text: Story is told in simple watercolor illustrations and short sentences. I think toddlers lose interest if the text is too much. Also this way I can tell him more from the pictures and ask what and why questions well. It also is a good book to start reading on own for kids.Since the text is short it gives me a chance to tell / explain the story/ pictures.
Board book: As  I said this book is perfect for 2 year olds especially in their early 2s like my son.

What my son learns from this:
- about planets and moon
- aliens and humans
- airplane and UFO
- helps develop  imagination
- emotions

Questions I ask my child while/ after reading the book:
- which planet do we/ aliens live on?
- what color is planet earth and mars?
- what is the boy/ alien doing( in the picture) and why?
Which planet you like? ( its always Mars:))
- Imagine finding a airplane/ going to the moon/meeting a alien

Last but not the least, all children are different and that's the beauty of life. The views and opinions in this book review are based on my experience with my son.

Children party centerpiece

The venue of my son's Birthday party was the local fire station - perfect for the theme and a boy party. It was a big hit so much better than a party hall. I will share all that fun later. But I will first share with you the preparations. So today I will tell you about the centerpieces. You know me I think no happy occasion is complete without flowers.

I used my sons formula tin cans. Covered them with red and yellow color papers which was the color theme. Tied a ribbon around them. Filled them with florist foam and arranged the flowers. Fixed the ballon in the center.

Lastly I designed and printed fire engine themed centerpiece toppers and fixed them in the foam as well. This way flowers got added to the theme without looking out of place!!

Baking activity for toddlers

Hello everyone!! Wish you all a very happy New Year!! The last month of 2013 past by really fast. Me and my little one did lots of fun activities together.  He is really crazy about everything related to Christmas. Good for us there were a lot of fun fairs, Christmas markets and Christmas parties here in Dubai. They even had artificial snowfall at fairs and market which I think everyone from old to young enjoyed. One such Christmas market had a workshop for kids to make or/and decorate gingerbread cookies and houses organized by French Bakery. My son is too young for that I thought. He was 22 months in Dec 2013. But since he really loves to watch Maisy bake gingerbread i began to plan in mind a baking fun activity with him. So one morning when he was telling me how to make a gingerbread, I thought he is just ready for baking.

1) I gave him a steel bowl with 3 eggs in it. He was super happy and roamed all over in admiration.
2) then I let him break the eggs under my supervision.

3) then he whisked the eggs.. Round and round. I let till he was satisfied. Then dropped the flour and other things in it. Again the mixing went on. Before pouring it in the pan I whisked it again.

3) then he poured it in the pan.. Yes he dropped it here and there. He had fun.
4) then I put it in the oven. I keep him away from oven and stove.

5) he admired his creations after they cooled down.
6) then we drew designs on it. I held his hand while doing it.

Voila that's it!! It tasted amazing. Out of this world.

After this we have baked 2 more cakes and gingerbread man cookies. He loves the idea of putting things together and then it forms a shape that everyone eats.

Some tips if you are planning such a activity:

Safety first: Keep all sharp objects away from his reach. Operate oven and blender by myself.

Planning or not:  Let this activity be impromptu, unplanned when your enthusiasm is at high and the little one is also in the mood to 'create' or 'make ' something.

Enjoy: Don't stress too much about the mess they would create.

Role playing: Two  roles I let him play in our baking activities are either
Assistant: Make him your assistant and tell him to get/ keep things, mix or pour.
Or
Master chef- in-training: Give instructions and help/intervene/ a bit but not too much.

Be a role model: I have learned that Children learn a activity  when they watch their mother/ father doing it and enjoying it.

Above all not to forget. All children are different and that's the beauty of life.

Gardening activity for toddlers

Just sharing snippets of my life with my lovely readers here..Enjoying the hot Middle eastern summer with my 16 month old. I want to develop love for gardening , good creative outlets for his energy, grow enthusiasm and interest. I believe if children learn to love and take care of plants and trees our planet might be greener in future.

My son is 16 months so he just imitates what I am doing. Children are so good in their observation and want to do exactly what their parents are doing. He watches me planting, watering and taking care of the plants. I love then my plants have flowers. I have home made bird bath.  He plucks the flowers and then drops them in the bird bath. Seems like the decorating bug is in him too:)

It gets windy here in the summer season. He likes to watch and play with the pinwheel go round and round. I have kept a pinwheel indoors as well.

He helps Mommy decorate the garden.. He even tries to pick up  pots:) Tried several places to keep this lantern finally settling on a chair .. Then turned and gave it a another look and nodded..Like now it looks good sort of expression!!

Oh my god how much the children observe and learn from us.. from what we are doing...Amazing!! So the other day I started reading books while he was playing  just to see that if he would pick up that habit as well.. And just in two days I see that  he is reading his books more and more ..even without me offering to read to him!!!

wow!! that really made me thinking..what else should I include in my daily life..parenting.. its my chance to get rid of all my  'bad habits' to good habits..like outdoor activities, eating healthy, less internet..more sports..Cultivating good habits is such an important task.. !!!!
