Where to eat in Zurich, Switzerland? Zeughauskeller - A must visit restaurant

If after living in Zurich for 4 long years if I cannot recommend you a restaurant it will be a shame. It was our favorite restaurant. We loved it for its delicious food , its decor and service. It is a traditional Swiss restaurant where you can enjoy traditional and authentic Swiss German food.

The building was build in 1487. It was build for storing weapons and ammunition. The name Zeughas means arsenal storehouse. After the war in the Middle ages, in 1926, the weapons were gone and life became sociable. It was then the arsenal building became a restaurant- a place to enjoy- with visitors from all corners of the world.

The restaurant has a large open space with an collection of weapons and armour suits decorating the walls. A huge anti-aircraft gun over the entrance invites you inside. One of the weapons on the wall is the William Tell's actual crossbow.

The windows are large with beautiful old style pattern. You get the view of the charming street of old town Zurich. The wooden ceiling has ornate design and chandeliers.

One of the dish on the menu is the "Mayor's Sword"- a real sword brought to the table wrapped with pork.

The restaurant is located near Bahnhofstrasse. If you are travelling by tram, the best way is to stop at Paradeplatz and walk across Bahnhofstrasse.

The place is always buzzing and lively. They always busy. There was always at lunch or dinner there was a queue outside. So it is best to book in advance. The service there is excellent and fast. WE have been there so many times and the food and service was always excellent. They wear traditional attire which makes it very interesting.

Decorating with paper doilies!!

Remember the table arrangement I did on Thursday. The centerpiece was made by a row of glass bottles with pretty colorful flowers in it... So today I am going to show you how to up cycle/ reuse/ decorate plain bottles to use them as vase..(I know I said Sunday but I am so super excited that I am writing this two days earlier..:)) This one is very easy ...For this you need:

Small sized paper doilies, Clear glass bottles(used, emptied and washed) , flowers , scissors ..thats it!!  So let's start..

Take a small sized doily.. Fold it into triangle ..

Then cut it so that a circle will remain in the center..Another way could be a draw the glass bottle neck shape on the doily and cut it..

It should look like this..

Thats it.. now put it in the bottles neck ..

and fill it with water, salt and flowers.. done!!!

Arrange many bottles the same way in a row..

Done... Isn't it easy way to decorate your table plus to reuse your glass bottles..

I will share some more ways to up cycle bottles soon...!!!

Home is where your heart is...

Home is where your heart is ...
My home is where my family is ..where my heart is..and that is the only way I have been able to successfully survive all our moves and integrate in the different cultures /countries...the only way one can call a rented house/apartment 'our own' ...love it with all its flaws ..

Hope you are having a great weekend and wish you a lovely week ahead!!!

Beach themed table arrangement

Its peak of summer with temperatures soaring high...Its perfect time for a beach party..!!! I am so excited .. this theme was on my mind for so long.. I wanted to capture and bring indoors, the beauty of summer, sand and fun !!

a4

So I started looking for stuff to decorate the table according to the theme..Most of the times we have all the things required to create a theme ..its just the matter of finding them and a little creativity..

I found some beautiful pebbles which I had collected from our walks.. sea shells , candles and these very pretty balls are made from wood chips..

These candles are strawberry scented ... very mild and yummy scent....

Once again I used my never used cotton dupatta (scarf), starched , folded , ironed  and  it became a perfect runner.. This one has beautiful golden border and design on the both sides..

The centerpiece is a beautiful boat I picked up recently.. I made origami boats to place on the soup dishes and marzipan flip-flops...

I must say making origami boats was so much fun.. I felt like a kid..:) After the guest are gone I will float them in water ..hehehe

Oh then I remembered that yesterday after dinner when my creative senses were on a high , I had carved a watermelon into a ship...

Watermelon ship

Took this picture yesterday evening(actually night).. I couldn't control my excitement and had to take a picture then and there..

So now this becomes the centerpiece and the appetizer/starter too..

I had carved a peacock last time..

Its  lot of fun and its easy to carve.. . I will post a tutorial some time..

Earth day Pledge

In Montreux,Switzerland, picture taken by me on a clear blue spring day last year!!

Today is Earth day- a day to remind us the importance of taking care of Earth - our only home. Many of us would say do we need such a day to celebrate..I say yes. Many of us are so busy and engrossed in their life that we forget our responsibilities towards nature and Earth.

For some a gentle reminder and to some a wake up call to take care and keep Earth clean just like we keep our apartment/house clean...to plant more trees..to make a extra effort to recycle and reuse..to enjoy the nature..
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors we borrow it from our children" ..So true.. This printable is free to download at this lovely blog- nothing but country.

I pledge to reuse, recycle, reduce, restore, restyle not only today but all through my life.

Rapperswil on Lake Zürich

rapperswil

Located on Lake Zürich , Rapperswil is a quaint little place with castle, cozy cafes, walks and tiny shops selling toys and other decorative items which are made locally..It was our  perfect getaway almost every week on a sunny summery day. We usually drove there via beautiful .. its a understatement..the villages are extremely beautiful ..with the blue snow capped alps as the backdrop.. the blue lake spread across..It is so wonderful to drive in Switzerland!!

rapperswil

It is possible to take a boat ride if you have the time, patience(lol) to spend 2-4 hours on the boat or if want to see all the small towns on the Lake Zurich ..!!  It is highly recommended if you are new or tourist in Zurich because it is extremely scenic and has many stops in between where you can stop and enjoy that place ...

escaping the summer heat

I had a very busy week and hoping to start with Christmas projects next week!!
Have a nice weekend!!!

Swiss beauty

Early this year on the first day of Spring ..1st April , DH and I drove to the French speaking part of Switzerland, Montreux. We both love this place and have went there 2-3 times earlier. We were expecting some good spring weather..But it was very cloudy, cold and yes..it started snowing hard. We thought this is nature's way of saying April Fool to us...:)) But later the weather transformed totally into a very pleasant and romantic cool atmosphere!!

In the evenings and early mornings we went for long walks around the lake Geneva  and in the quaint town..!  The French apls provide a breathtaking and stunning backdrop!! I took a video from my hotel balcony..

During the day time we drove into France and enjoyed the neighboring French and Swiss cities, quaint towns with serene natural beauty!!!

We have traveled in Europe by train earlier when we were new in Zürich ..It is easy and comfortable. Once we got a car we realized that the natural beauty one can enjoy driving on the roads in small towns, cute villages cannot be enjoyed by public transport. I believe one cannot really truly enjoy and have seen Europe especially Switzerland if you didn't drive there. So if planning a trip there ..rent a car and drive around!!

Organize with Recycled bottles

By now all those who read my blog know how much I love recycling..making plain items pretty and reusing!! I did this project in Zürich to organize my craft supplies. (I am so happy to see my stuff again tomorrow!!)

IMG_0907

This project came to my mind when I saw glass jar (just like a jam jar) with a pretty cap in a local mall. I was wondering why people are buying empty jam jars/bottles with a pretty lid. I mean you can recycle the ones you have already have at home!! So I came home and decided to do it myself.

To do this project, all you need is a used, empty, cleaned glass bottle/jar. I used a jalapeño bottle and acrylic colors. Then remove the paper label. I used a bottle without any engraving or labels embossed on it.

I painted it 2-3 coats. Let it dry for 1 hour or more..

Decorate it whatever design you want using a stencil or painting directly..

Store your craft or food items in your pretty jar..

It's hard to tell if it is  reused bottle or  I bought a mass produced one from the mall:)

Recycling is good..It's very very good.. Just take a look at the pretty things people have created using recycled bottles..

This Thai temple is build using more than one million glass bottles..It is a piece of art.. Check out more pics of the temple here..

Spicy Fall Table decor

Spicy table decor

The autumn is finally here..Its time for sunny and rainy days ..cool evenings and shorter days... crimson leaves falling on the ground.... crisp air!!!
It's time to celebrate fall/autumn season!!!!
I decided to make this fall table decor with down to earth, natural accessories..with some things which I feel describe the fall season...

spicy table decor

This is a table for two.. I love to do table decor and arrangement for me and my husband .Its fun and adds spice to everyday life. It makes regular and sometimes stressful days very special!!

Spicy table decor

I used wood, cork and spices to decorate this fall themed table. The highlight of the autumn season is the changing of color of leaves.. some lucky people get to see splendid shades and colors of the leaves in their region.. I see more of crunchy brown and some red leaves floating down and the intricate structure of the trees left bare and naked by the leaves:)  The crunchy leaves make a lovely sound when we walk on it!!! I really like it!!  That is  why I had the major color of the table decor as brown !!

Spicy fall decor

The centerpiece is made of pinecones.. I love to collect pine cones from our walks and strolls...I placed a medium sized pine cones in terracotta pots.Added some flowers and kept them in rattan tray with a scented candle!!

A close up of the swiss dancing couple in their traditional clothes.. It is a Schweizer Heimatwerk (swiss handicraft) product.. hand carved from wood. It is not one piece..The lady can move round and I can arrange them in other dance poses as well.. A special gift from my husband !!!

spicy fall decor

I really like star anise spice.. It looks so pretty..I arranged 4 star anise around the Japanese bowls..and placed flowers in the soup spoon..lavender for him and yellow for me!!

spicy table decor

Browns and reds are the two main colors of fall..though I must admit I see more browns than reds.. exactly in the proportion of red color in my table decor:) I tied a red napkin and 2 cinnamon sticks with a white ribbon..Red color and cinnamon sticks give a festive effect.. This could be perfect idea for Christmas as well!!

spicy fall decor

The coasters are from Malaysia and have a beautiful design on them and a rattan border to them (you might have noticed them on the walls of my apartment from my earlier post

spicy table decor

I used cork as wine glass coater.. I am planning to paint on them some day when I get time..

Spicy table decor

On the other side I placed Balinese dolphin wood carvings..!!! So thats my spicy fall table inspired by nature and the seasons
colors and charm..!!
I recently saw pumpkins in the market..I want to do a orange decor next!!!

I will move into our new house in 2 days and am very excited!! Also my furniture has finally arrived by ship and I am so eager to see my dining table and things again!!!
New decor projects... new walls to cover.. new DIYs.. new corners to be decorated... and all the odd corners, bare walls and some not-so-perfect areas are waiting for me to fix them....Yipeeee!!!
